Poem: "Lull"

"Lull"

In the silent tempting underbrush
When night succumbs to the first light
Of captivating dawn
She waits beside the lake's shore

Guided by voices
The woman she was
In her long captured youth
When the rapture of longing
And love's irresistible allure
Threatened to overtake her

She touches the still waters
Remembering every inch, every contour
Of her lover's face, now gone
"It is so lonely at night," she reminds herself

The stars twinkle mercilessly
As they streak across the sky
She longs to put on some make up
And that familiar black dress

Though she may want indiscretion tonight
She resists because she knows
It is far more enticing to be
Waiting for her beloved's return
Amid the shadows that haunt her

Inside, a shattered heart still beats.
