Poem: "Nothing Ventured But The Sky"

"Nothing Ventured But The Sky"

To tempt fate would be
impossibly foolish and yet
here I am again like the old hag
that I have so loathed to become

The velvet splendor of youth and possibility
is gone
behind me now like a meandering road
caked in ruin and despair

She was
only a brief glimpse
mere snapshots
to be certain
memorable yet fleeting
at once

The prettiest thing
about a woman
is her tongue

The sun and its veiled corpse
of unearned promises and obituaries
does nothing to stem the tide
of horror and unkempt deceit

Her mouth upon mine
tastes like ashes before the belfry tower
trapped in a cocoon of longing and
forbidden fruit

Until I awake
bathed in sweat and agony
dying and lonely
just another tick
on God's scoreboard.

Poem: "The Distance"

"The Distance"

Night is in bloom now
the stars streak across the sky
as the world is quiet
sleep does not come calling
the dream fades into

Jaded shards of black
broken glass and hollow screams
the bed, once warm and comforting
is now forlorn and desolate

I cannot give you
whatever it was you wanted
I cannot sing the lullaby
to tame your restless heart

All I ever gave was my love
and that was not good enough
please let me waste away
in the bitter taste of my sea of woe and regret

For if forever may come too late
my soul shall never see
the heaven that was to be
you and I.
