Poem: "Sober"

"Sober"

The bright sun has burned away
the last vestiges of self-control
as the bottle sits silently on the desk
in front of me

the bed where I lay is empty
and cold
your subtle warmth
gone away

the phone rings
I let the answering machine
pick up
just so I can your voice again

the walls
are bare now
it's too late
to save me
from the fall

sometimes
I close my eyes
and hear you
whisper softly

your fragrant beauty
lingers awhile
clinging to me
haunting my soul
stirring my bones

amid perfect strokes
of shadow and release
the aching intersection
of unbridled sensuality.
